Directory Services

Directory Service objects are used to:

  • Define root connections to Active Directory.
  • Define organizational unit specific connections to Active Directory.
  • Define connections for each Active Directory server in a multiple domain environment.
  • Define connections to non-Active Directory LDAP servers.

Startup:

Server Manager automatically attempts to discover and connect to Active Directory at startup then, if successful, adds a new Directory Service object under the Directory Services node.

Use Scenarios:

Auto-Configurator

The Auto-Configurator enables you to define a different set of templates to assign for different organizational units. For example, create one Auto-Configurator that targets the organizational unit that maintains your server list, then assign server specific templates. Then create another Auto-Configurator that targets the organizational unit that maintains your workstation list, then assign workstation specific templates.

Templates

Several Templates use Directory Service Connections:

Reports

Several Reports, such as Success Logons, use Active Directory when executing. For example, when a user filter is assigned to the Success Logon Report, the report uses Active Directory to lookup, validate and filter each user listed in the report.
